ABOUT DUENDE

A SPACE OF INSPIRATION

DUENDE
The Spanish to English translation is: the experience of art as inspiration and trans-formative.
The majesty and scale of the silos and its environs, is nothing less than awe invoking - a fierce testament to the capacity of humankind’s ability to build and create. For decades, the silos have not functioned as they were originally intended.  Still, there is great beauty in the texture of their decay, and in their stubborn and persistent resilience.  There are countless dimensions to the evocative power of the silos.  The ruins invite one to imagine the time when the inconceivably colossal structures were first erected, and how then served their then vital regional commercial role.   The people that built  and worked in and around the silos, formed the surrounding historic neighborhoods.  The silos dominated the visual landscape.  Enter, and the audible resonance in the now empty and cavernous towering spaces is akin to that of a great gothic cathedral. Their survival and rebirth are part of the wave of reawakening in the region more generally and are destined to become a hub of creativity and commerce going forward.

Rick Smith, guardian to this historically significant campus, has always understood the need to preserve and share this vital link to our cultural past.  It is a comprehensive appreciation which nurtures both  the ecological heritage of the land, as well the historical and architectural provenance of the site and its buildings. Part of restoring life to these long abandoned buildings means bringing them to relevancy through partnership with the Generation development group, support of  and collaboration with the UB School of Architecture and Planning, development of Lyceum, and the creation of Duende.

Duende is an indoor/outdoor meeting place in Silo City where one can enjoy music, food, drink and art.  It has been formed of and from the literal remnants of site itself.   Rick Smith, owner of Duende, has invited you to come and be moved by the awe inspiring energy of silos, and the creativity and passion of the people who have come to love these monumental buildings and their history.  Together we are bringing the silos back to life and relevancy.

Recent EVENTS

The Gallery at Duende had it’s inaugural event June 2021.  Each month a new event was featured and our shows ranged from found object model boats by Justin Higner, to photographic group events based on Silo City and its environs.
For the year of 2022, gallery events will be extended to 6 weeks.  We started the year with a 7 person show featuring multimedia portraiture.  March opened with a one woman show featuring the conceptual work of Katrina Kauffman.  In mid April, we look forward to the work of Samuel Allison and Taiitan, who are both completing masters degrees in Fine Arts at the University at Buffalo.  Please check our calendar page to stay informed of our upcoming events and openings - we are free to the public and all are welcome!
