REBECCA SCHWARZBERG
My work exists at a crossroads between figurative sculpture and doll making. As the daughter of a figurative sculptor, expressing my inner world through the vehicle of the human body is intrinsic to who I am.
My work is centered around the process of becoming, and strives to express the struggle towards self actualization.
I examine archetypal imagery and themes found in fairy tales that mirror this process and the time and strength that it takes to walk the path towards true freedom.
Through an investigation of the inner and outer worlds of emotion and nature, I explore the idea that separation is an illusion, finding solace and connection in the beauty of nature as well as urban decay. I incorporate many processes of making, each a time of meditation and connection to self and a universal energy that acts as a guide.
I examine what it means to be human through the process of making, following an intuitive process, I sculpt faces, heads and hands into clay, hand stitch vintage fabrics into bodies and stuff them with wool creating figures who find their homes in worlds fabricated with found objects from man made and natural worlds. Rusted metal, driftwood, broken glass, plant materials and discarded objects are woven together to tell the ever present story of transformation and becoming.
